Series Notes

* Maryland holds a 34-14 edge over the Yellow Jackets and are 20-3 versus Georgia Tech teams on their home court. The Jackets are 1-0 on the Comcast Center’s court, the Terps new home since moving from Cole Field House prior to last season.

* These two teams first met on the hardwood in College Park, when the Terps defeated the Jackets by a 94-78 score in November, 1979. That win for Maryland marked the beginning of a 10-0 run for the Terps before Tech earned its first win in the series on January 13, 1986, 73-66, at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

* The Jackets won the last meeting between the two teams, 59-51 on Tech’s home court in February, 2003. Although the Terps have won 20 more games, the series has evened out over the last 10 meetings, with Tech holding a 6-4 edge since January, 1999.

* Tech’s last victory in College Park came in 2001, when the Jackets narrowly defeated the Terrapins by a 66-62 score, while the first victory for the Jackets in Maryland came on February 5, 1995. Prior to that meeting, the Jackets had dropped 14 straight to the Terps on their home court. In the last two meetings on Maryland’s home court, the Jackets have lost 81-70 in overtime in February, 2002, and 71-63 last season.

Jackets vs. Terps: Last Time Out

Sonja Mallory led all scorers with 21 points in 39 minutes of play as the Jackets had three players score in double-figures in the contest. Fallon Stokes recorded 13 points in the game while Alex Stewart added 10. Stewart led the Jackets with nine rebounds while dishing out five assists in the game. Maryland also had three players score in double-figures with Renneika Razor and Chrissy Fisher scoring 11 and Terri Daniels adding 10. Fisher also pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the contest while Razor had five.

Tech Record Book Against Maryland

* Maryland’s 30 points versus the Yellow Jackets on February 5, 1996, was the fewest points Tech has ever allowed in a game. Georgia Tech won that contest, 59-30 on its homecourt. That win marked the fourth-highest margin of victory for the Jackets in an ACC game. The very next year, Maryland scored just 40 points to mark the second fewest points allowed in an ACC game and sixth overall for the Jackets as Tech won, 44-40 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

* In 1995, the Jackets set a record for the most three-point field goals in a game when they hit 11 versus Maryland in a home victory, 82-59. The following year, Georgia Tech hit 10 threes versus the Terps in the second-most three-point attempts in history and most in an ACC competition.

* This week, the Terrapins received 29 votes in the AP Poll. The Jackets have defeated ranked Maryland teams three times in history. The first was an overtime victory at home, 81-80, in 1987 and the last one came against the fourth-ranked Terps, 68-67, at the ACC Tournament in 1992.

* Dolores Bootz (1988) and Fallon Stokes (2002) each hit 15 field goals against Maryland teams, which marks the most field goals against an ACC team in Tech history and third-most overall.

Looking at the Terps

Maryland dropped its first conference matchup of the year when Florida State defeated the Terps in their last game in Tallahassee by a 82-77 score. The Seminoles had two players (Tasheika Allen and Shante Williams) score at least 20 points while the team shot a blistering 55 percent from the field. Kalika France scored 26 points for the Terps in the contest, while Alli Spence contributed 11. Maryland is off to an 11-4 start this season and a 3-1 conference start. The Terps dropped Virginia, 69-55, at home to begin conference play and then defeated Wake Forest by a 75-58 mark in Winston-Salem. The Terps are led this season by two freshmen, Shay Doron and Kalika France. Doron is averaging 12.7 points per game and has dished out 29 assists while stealing 21 passes on the season. Averaging 12.5 points on the season is France, while she has contributed 36 assists and 27 steals and leads the team averaging 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior Crystal Washington has a team-best 20 blocks on the season and averages 5.6 rebounds per game while junior Alli Spence is pacing the Terps with 58 assists this season.

Last Time Out for the Jackets

The Yellow Jackets lost a 60-59 heartbreaker in Charlottesville, a place where they now own a 1-23 record. LaTonya Blue hit a pair of free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining to put the Cavs up by one and Alex Stewart’s layup at the buzzer hit the rim but didn’t fall in. Fallon Stokes led all scorers in the contest with a season-high 26 points while also pulling down eight rebounds, dishing out two assists, and retrieving two steals in the contest. Freshman Kentrina Wilson led the Jackets with nine rebounds in the game while scoring eight points and blocking two shots, including one in the final minute of the game that eventually led to a pair of Georgia Tech free throws to place the Jackets ahead by one with 30 seconds remaining. Georgia Tech and Virginia matched in virtually every category except for free throws, as the Cavaliers shot 37, making 23, while the Jackets hit just 10-of-13. Each team shot 39 percent from the field, the ‘Hoos had one more assist than the Jackets while Tech had two more turnovers. Virginia was led by Kate Kreager, Jocelyn Logan-Friend and Safiya Grant-Fairley with 11 points apiece.
