KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Nisha Kurian finished the women’s 6K race in 25th place with a time of 22:08.8 to help the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the 2006 NCAA South Regional. David Herren finished first for Tech’s men’s team on the Lambert Acres Golf 10K course.
Tech’s women finished with 187 points and three girls in the top-30 at the Regional, which featured 155 athletes from 23 different schools in the south. Senior Mary Chind placed 28th overall (22:13.4) and was followed by junior Elena Linn in 29th (22:14.3). Finishing fourth for the Jackets was freshman Carola Conces, who placed 51st in her first Regional with a time of 22:50.3.
The Jackets in-state rival, Georgia, finished first with 35 points. The Bulldogs were followed by Florida, Tennessee and Atlantic Coast Conference foe, Florida State. All four teams are currently ranked nationally by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA). The Jackets competed very well against some extremely tough competition.
The men were once again led by senior David Herren, who crossed the line in 33:01.7 for a 41st overall finish. Behind Herren was junior Nazar Trilisky, who once again finished second for the Jackets. Trilisky placed 72nd overall with a time of 33:58.2. Also competing for Tech was sophomore Casey Gramling (34:55.2) and senior Paul Specht (34:57.7).
Florida State won the Regional with 67 points and was followed by Alabama and Florida. The top-three teams are all currently ranked nationally by the USTFCCCA. With a 15th-overall finish, Tech finished ahead of ACC opponent Miami and regional rival Chattanooga.
