PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Second-seeded Kristi Miller’s quest for the singles title at the 2006 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships was stopped Friday afternoon when she lost in straight sets to California’s Suzi Babos at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Georgia Tech All-American recorded a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the first round Friday to set up the matchup with Babos, but couldn’t advance past the Round of 16, losing 6-4, 6-4.
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season – the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila – is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season. The Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, the Nov. 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis’ three national championship events during the season.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
The Oct. 5-8 main draw was preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament was Sept. 31-Oct. 1 at UCLA, with eight players and four doubles teams advancing from there to the Oct. 3-4 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams advanced to the main draw).
