March 6, 2004

ATLANTA – Lyndsay Shosho defeated 10th-ranked Karin Coetzee, leading No. 43 Georgia Tech (6-3) to a 6-1 win over visiting Wake Forest (7-3), the 29th-ranked team in the country, Saturday on the outdoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Tech began the afternoon capturing the doubles point with wins in the Nos 1 and 2 positions. Kelly Anderson teamed with Sekita Grant to down the 47th-ranked duo in the country in Coetzee and Katie Martzolf in the top slot, 8-2 while Maria Nieto and Shosho defeated Ashlee Davis and Danielle Schwartz in a close 9-7 match in the No. 2 slot.

Wake Forest tied the match at 1-1 after Davis defeated Tech’s Lindsey Stauss, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Grant then untied the match with an easy, 6-1, 6-1, win against the Deacs’ Schwartz in the No. 6 position before Anderson came back from an 0-3 deficit in the second set of her match to down Martzolf, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Jackets.

Shosho continued her outstanding play in the singles competition, winning at No. 1 against the 10th-ranked singles player in the country, Coetzee, by a score of 6-2, 6-3 to secure the match victory for Georgia Tech shortly after the conclusion of the No. 2 singles match.

Nieto also went to a three-set tiebreaker, as she took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second, 5-7.

“It was a good start to our ACC season,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton, “and it was against a solid opponent in Wake Forest. I was very pleased with the effort of our team today.”
