Tech Track Teams Finish Strong at Florida Relays

Harrington sets new school record in the hammer on final day
Gainesville, FL – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up a strong weekend at the Florida Relays by placing all of their competitors on the final day in the top 10 of their respective events. The four-day meet was held at Percy Beard Track on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

On the men’s side, Tech had six performers claim top-10 finishes, led by Sean Harrington in the hammer throw, as he recorded a school-record distance of 165-8.00, breaking the previous mark of 163-6.00, held by Jorge Gadalmaria by just over two feet.

Clayton Porter also finished in the top 10 in the long jump as he placed third with a leap of 24-1.00. He was followed in the event by Chris Crawley’s jump of 21-6.00, which was good for 10th place.

Also in field-event competition, Michael Massey placed ninth in the high jump with his height of 6-8.75. In running events on Saturday, Montrell Person finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 14.75 seconds, and Tech’s 4×400 relay team was fourth in a time of 3:12.11.

The Yellow Jacket women had another outstanding day, as nine performers placed in the top 10, including freshman Renee Metivier, who won the 3000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 10:32.43. Metivier led a Tech sweep of the top three spots as Amy Edwards, who finished second in a time of 11:24.91, and Betsy Bulat followed her in the event in third at 11:55.68.

In the 3000-meter run, Tech finished strong as sophomore Amy Dock placed third with a time of 9:41.97, while Tina Frey followed her in seventh place with a time of 10:17.97. Joining that duo on the top 10 was Rachael Caruso, who placed 10th with a time of 10:31.81.

The Jackets’ final two top-10 finishes in the running events included Nicole Campbell’s ninth-place effort in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:38.68, and the 4×100-meter relay which was ninth in a time of 47.44.

The final event of the day to find Tech women in the top 10 was the high jump, where Jamie Ostrov finished seventh and Jennifer Ledbetter was eighth with matching heights of 5-6.00.

Georgia Tech will return to action next Saturday, April 7, when it hosts the Yellow Jacket Invitational at George Griffin Track on the Tech campus.
