ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the annual Georgia Tech Invitational this Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, at the George C. Griffin Track on the campus of Georgia Tech. The outdoor track meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Friday evening and run through Saturday afternoon.
Competing in his final events on the campus of Georgia Tech will be Atlantic Coast Conference indoor and outdoor Performer of the Year, senior Brendon Mahoney. Mahoney will run the 1500 meters on Friday at 8 p.m. and compete in the 800 meters on Saturday at 4:55 p.m.
Women’s high jump national champion Chaunte Howard will be competing for the Yellow Jackets. Howard holds the second-best mark in the high jump (6’3.75″) by an American and will be in the women’s high jump, along with the long jump and 100-meter hurdles.
Senior sprinter Amandi Rhett will be running the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the Jackets. Rhett holds the top mark on the team this season in the 100 and has qualifying marks for the NCAA Region Championships (May 28-29) in both events.
Shot put ACC champion Zeb Sion will also be in competition this weekend, throwing the shot put at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. Junior Jonathan Spillman will also throw the 16-pound ball for the Jackets.
Senior Michael Massey will be competing in the men’s high jump for the Rambling Wreck. Massey holds the top mark for Tech at 6’11.75″ and will be looking to improve his NCAA Region qualifying mark in the event.
Distance runners Barton Crist, Netz Ezer and David Schmidt will be competing for the Jackets on Saturday afternoon. All three will be searching for their first NCAA Region qualifying times of the season.
Senior Spencer Irvine will try and notch his first NCAA mark in the men’s triple jump on Saturday afternoon. Fellow seniors Priscilla Reed and Melanie Waits will also be competing in their final home meet, both in the hurdles. Reed will run the 400-meter hurdles, while Waits will compete in the 100mHH.
