ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Austin, Texas, for the Outdoor NCAA Track and Field Championships, June 9-13. The outdoor meet will begin this Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
Senior sprinter Amandi Rhett will compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the Rambling Wreck. Rhett finished fourth in the 100 at the NCAA East Region Championships and ran a season-best time of 23.55 in the 200 at the Georgia Tech Invitational to qualify for the outdoor NCAA meet. Rhett will also run a leg of the 4x100m relay team.
Sophomore Chaunte Howard will try and repeat her national title during the indoor season at the outdoor championship meet. The sophomore holds the third best mark in the United States this season with a clear of 6’4.75″, setting Tech and ACC records at the ACC meet. Howard set a NCAA East Region meet record on May 29 with a clear of 6’3.75″.
Senior Brendon Mahoney will compete in his final NCAA Championships this weekend. The senior distance runner will try and improve on his 15th-place finish in the 1500 meters a year ago at the NCAA Championships. Mahoney tallied a third-place finish in the 1500 at the NCAA East Region Championships and holds an ACC best time of 3:41.43 in the event.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Dana Rogers, Ashlee Kidd, Andriane Lapsley, Rhett will compete for the second straight year at the NCAA meet, setting a new school record at the NCAA Region meet with a time of 44.0.
Kidd qualified for her first outdoor NCAA meet in the 400 meters. The freshman posted season-best times for Tech in the 200 (23.53) and 400 (51.76) en route to winning ACC titles in both events this past April. Kidd posted a lifetime-best time in the 400 at the NCAA Region meet to finish second and will also run a leg of the 4x100m relay team.
Junior Montrell Person will be making his debut at the Outdoor NCAA Championships. Person finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles at the NCAA East Region Championships with a time of 13.66. The Merriville, Ind., native holds the top time in the ACC with a mark of 13.60.
Senior Michael Massey is also making his first appearance at the outdoor NCAA meet. Massey posted a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Region meet with a mark of 6’11.00″ in the men’s high jump. The Asheboro, N.C., native tallied a season-best mark of 6’11.75″ at the ACC Championships, finishing second.
Sophomore Brandy Depland will compete in her first NCAA Championship meet. Depland posted a Tech best mark of 43’1.75″ in the women’s triple jump and received an at-large invite to the national championships meet.
