ATLANTA – With successful indoor seasons under their belts, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams open the 2003 outdoor season Saturday at the Clemson Relays, held at the Tigers’ Rock Norman Track. The Jackets will also send five women’s 400-meter hurdlers to the Alabama Relays Saturday.
Action at Clemson opens at 10 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw and women’s javelin and wraps up with the men’s 4×400-meter relay at 5:20 p.m. The 400 hurdles at Alabama is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Tech’s women’s contingent at Clemson will be led by NCAA indoor qualifiers Chaunte Howard (high jump) and Jessica Graff (pole vault). Also among those competing for the women will be indoor All-ACC performers Jessica DeFreitas, Amandi Rhett, Shanta Smith and Melanie Waits.
The Yellow Jacket men’s team also returns several indoor all-conference honorees, including Ian Brewer (weight throw), Brian Fraser (triple jump), Brendon Mahoney (mile), Kyle Rabbitt (5000 meters) and Bryan Swarn (800 meters).
Competing in the 400-meter hurdles at the Alabama Relays will be Nicole Kieliszak, Jamie Ostrov, Priscilla Reed, Courtney Thomas and Alberta Watkins.
Following this weekend’s action, the Jackets are scheduled to compete at both the Florida Relays and Stanford Invitational, March 28-29.
