THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis welcomes the Auburn Tigers to the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Friday at 5 p.m. After the match, the Yellow Jackets will travel to Columbia, S.C. to face South Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The Jackets competed at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by the Virginia Cavaliers this past weekend, making it to the championship match.
The weekend started against Middle Tennessee State. Tech dropped the doubles point before roaring back to a 4-2 victory on the backs of four spectacular singles matches from Pablo Schelcher, Chen Dong, Marcus McDaniel and Andres Martin.
Dong defeated the No. 106 ranked player in the nation and Martin beat the No. 30 ranked player in the nation.
The following day, the Yellow Jackets took on No. 6 Virginia. The doubles point came down to No. 1 doubles after Dong and Ángel Guerrero Melgar took their doubles match, 6-2. No. 1 doubles would go to Virginia, 6-4, giving them the doubles point.
Martin and McDaniel were heading into a third set of their singles matches when Virginia clinched after a flurry of finishes on No. 4-6 singles giving the No. 6 Cavaliers the 4-0 victory.
