THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (13-6, 2-4 ACC) wraps up a 21-game home stand with a doubleheader Wednesday against Virginia (3-16, 1-5). First pitch is set for 4:03 p.m. on ESPN3 with Melissa Lee and Roddy Jones on the call.

The Jackets hit the road for the first time this season for a three-game series this weekend at Maryland. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game both start at 1 p.m.
Series History
Wednesday’s games mark the 71st and 72nd meetings between the two teams and the Cavaliers lead the series, 37-33. The series began on Feb. 25, 1989 in Atlanta when Virginia defeated the Jackets 9-0. The most recent competition came last season in Charlottesville, Va., where the Jackets took the series 2-1.
Georgia Tech
The Jackets are looking to pick up two conference wins Wednesday after dropping two of three games against No. 21/22 Notre Dame. Tech is 2-3 in its last five games and 6-4 in its last 10 games.
The first three batters in Georgia Tech’s line up are hitting well above .300 in Hayley Downs (.396), Alysha Rudnik (.389) and Ashley Thomas (.375). Those three seniors are producing 44 percent of Tech’s runs with 42 runs combined.
Junior Karly Fullem and sophomore Maddie Lionberger also have double-digit runs with 10 and 12, respectively, on 14 hits each. Eight of Lionberger’s hits have been for extra bases and 10 of Fullem’s hits have been for extras.
Kylie Kleinschmidt owns an ERA of 0.98 and nine wins. Freshman pitcher Kanani Cabrales picked up her first ACC win against No. 21 Notre Dame on Saturday. At the plate, Cabrales is batting .400 with five runs on eight hits in 20 at bats.
NCAA Top 50
The first NCAA stats release of the season was posted on March 10 and the Yellow Jackets rank in the top 50 in three categories as a team and eight categories individually. As a team, Tech is No. 22 in home runs per game (1.16), No. 44 in slugging percentage (.488) and No. 48 in stolen bases per game (1.53).
Individually, Ashley Thomas is No. 32 in home runs (6), No. 37 in runs per game (1.11) and No. 44 in home runs per game (0.32). Hayley Downs is No 36 in sacrifice hits per game (0.32) and No. 41 in stolen bases per game (0.58). Chelsie Thomas is tied for first as the toughest to strikeout with zero strikeouts in 38 at bats. Kylie Kleinschmidt is No. 30 in both victories (9) and ERA (0.98).
