Tech Sweeps UConn in Doubleheader

THE FLATS – With a three home run day, Georgia Tech softball (10-7) swept UConn (7-11) in a doubleheader on Saturday as part of the I-75 Challenge at Mewborn Field. After shutting out the Huskies 5-0 in game one, Tech completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in game two.

Head coach Aileen Morales said:
“Anderson and Dickerson threw great games today for us. Anytime we have those types of performances we will have a chance to win games. They set the tone and our hitters produced when needed.”

Game 1: Georgia Tech 5, UConn 0
Sophomore Crosby Huckabay put Tech on the board first. The sophomore drew a walk in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded and two outs on the board to plate freshman Cameron Stanford and give Tech the first lead of the game at 1-0. Stanford then singled to left field to reach base.

Tech added two to its tally in the second. Junior KayleeEllebracht singled to reach base and senior Malea Bell moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Breanna Roper singled down the middle, advancing to second on the throw and moving Ellebracht to third. Stanford hit a ball to the second baseman, reaching on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Ellebracht to score as Roper was tagged out at third. Senior Draven Sonnon and junior Katie Krzus drew back-to-back walks for the Jackets to load the bases. The Huskies made a pitching change and a wild pitch, scored Stanford from third, bringing the score to 3-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Stanford and Sonnon each took four balls to reach base. Krzus singled to center field, plating Stanford from second to push Tech’s lead to 4-0.

Ellebracht hit her second home run of the weekend, sending a solo shot over center field in the bottom of the fifth to move the score to 5-0 for the Jackets for the final run of the game.

Senior Emily Anderson got the start in the circle for the White and Gold after pitching all 10 innings of Tech’s victory over DePaul in game one of Friday’s doubleheader. Anderson held the Huskies to one hit, recording her third shutout of the season with the win.

Game 2: Georgia Tech 3, UConn 2
Both teams were scoreless heading into the bottom of the third inning. Leading off the inning, Stanford sent the second pitch out of the left field fence for her third home run of the season, giving Tech the 1-0 lead.

Taking Tech’s 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, Sonnon hit her second home run of the season over center field, putting Tech up 2-0. Freshman Lilly Hooper took four balls to reach base and then made her way around the bases on three wild pitches to score and move the tally to 3-0 in favor of Tech.

Freshman Naomi Dickerson held the Huskies scoreless through five innings, allowing two unearned runs to score off a single in the top of the sixth to put UConn on the board for the first time all day. The Jackets kept UConn at two runs and Anderson came in to pitch the last inning for the Jackets, securing the win with her first save of the season. Dickerson came away with the win.

Up next:
The Jackets finish out the I-75 Challenge and the last of a six-game home stand on Sunday, hosting Detroit Mercy for a single game at 1 p.m. at Mewborn Field.
