Tech Sweeps Penn State in Doubleheader

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (12-2) bested Penn State twice to sweep day one of the I-75 Tournament on Friday afternoon at Mewborn Field. Senior outfielder Ariella Jackson ended a pitcher’s duel in game one with a walk-off, two-run dinger for her first career homerun and a 2-0 Yellow Jacket victory. Game two was also quiet until a five-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth propelled the White and Gold to a 6-4 triumph.

Freshman outfielder Ella Edgmon was the steadiest bat at the dish through the day, going 3-for-5 with an RBI from the nine hole. Junior right hander Chandler Dennis, meanwhile, shined in the circle, putting forth the strongest performance on a pitcher’s day tossing six innings and tallying six strikeouts while allowing no runs on four hits.

Game One: The Yellow Jackets and Nittany Lions (6-5) found themselves in a stalemate all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning as pitchers on both sides kept the bats at bay. Sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo, who made yet another highlight reel diving catch in the field, led off the inning with a single to left. Jackson then stepped in to pinch hit with one down, taking the swing of her life as she sailed one over the right-field wall for a walk-off, two-run home run. Her first time going yard at the collegiate level resulted in a 2-0 victory for the White and Gold.

Game Two: Penn State wasted no time getting going, launching a solo shot in the top of the first. Tech responded in the bottom of the frame as junior catcher Emma Kauf led things off with a double and was driven in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of graduate first baseman Tricia Awald. With the tally knotted at 1-1 after one, both pitchers once again prevented their opposition from taking the lead until the sixth as the Jackets exploded in the bottom half for five runs. Awald got the inning started with her 200th career hit, setting up a following RBI double by sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black. Tech loaded up the bases with one out soon after, allowing a Sileo double to plate two more runs for a 4-1 advantage in favor of the White and Gold. A wild pitch allowed another run to score, and Edgmon then cracked an RBI single to move Tech ahead 6-1. Penn State didn’t waver in its final opportunity, driving a three-run home run to cut the lead to two, but senior slinger Palmer Pinholster would enter the circle and close things out for a 6-4 Georgia Tech win.
