ATLANTA – Tennessee standout Tiffany Birtcil has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Georgia Tech softball team, Yellow Jacket head coach Kate Madden announced Tuesday.
“We are very excited to have signed Tiffany early,” said Madden. “She will be a big asset to this team next year, especially because she can play more than one position. We will most likely use her at one of the corners and also give her some time at catcher. She has a great arm and will bring more power to our offense.”
Birtcil, who will join Tech for the 2004 season, recently completed a stellar senior season at Lavergne High School in Lavergne, Tenn. She set school records for home runs (5), batting average (.472) and on-base percentage (.712). She was named her team’s Offensive Player of the Year, as well as its Most Versatile Player.
Additionally, she earned all-district honors and was named to the district all-tournament team this past season. Birtcil also competed for the Tennessee Elite summer team.
Madden projects Birtcil to play first and third base and possibly see some time at catcher for the Jackets.
The defending ACC champion Yellow Jackets open the 2003 season at the Gamecock Invitational on February 8.
