ATLANTA – Fresh off a sweep of Georgia State Wednesday, the Georgia Tech softball team (7-1, 0-0 ACC) will open play in the FAU Worth Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday. The Jackets will face Rutgers at 1 p.m. and 21st-ranked Florida Atlantic at 5 p.m.
The Jackets are led by sophomore shortstop Tara Knudsen, the ACC’s leading hitter. She has posted a .577 average this season, as well as three home runs and 14 runs batted in. Senior Jamie Frost owns a .350 average.
Tech’s pitching staff has also been stellar, owning a 1.00 earned run average. Freshman Jessica Sallinger, who has already thrown two no-hitters this season, leads the way with a 4-0 record and 33 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched.
This tournament will be the first action of the season for Rutgers, while FAU is 9-2 on the season.
Saturday, Tech will face Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. and Florida International at 11 a.m. Bracket play will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday and resume at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The championship game will is slated for 12:30 p.m.
Southern Illinois enters the tournament with a 4-1 mark and a win at the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic. Florida International sports an 8-9 record this season.
Tech owns a 1-2 all-time record against both Florida Atlantic and Southern Illinois. The Jackets have never faced Rutgers or Florida International.
