ATLANTA – After going 3-1 in its first four home games of the season, the Georgia Tech softball team makes its first road trip of the season when the Jackets travel to Statesboro for a doubleheader with Georgia Southern Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field.
Tech is coming off a doubleheader split with Furman on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets took game two, 6-1, behind freshman Jessica Sallinger’s second win of the season and a late-inning offensive outburst, which put the game away.
Sophomore Tara Knudsen leads Tech offensively with a .583 batting average and five runs batted in. Sophomore Soraya Reddick and junior Tara Neff are both hitting .500 on the young season.
As far as pitching, all three of the Jackets’ hurlers have been strong. Sallinger is 2-0 with a 0.58 earned run average and 18 strikeouts in her first two outings. Sophomore Erin Voeltz has a 1.40 ERA and nine strikeouts, while junior Tiffany Goodman is 1-0 with a 1.75 ERA.
Georgia Southern has enjoyed a rough start to the 2002 season, as the Eagles enter Saturday’s contests with a 0-6 record. Kim Griffin leads GSU with a .267 batting average.
The Jackets lead the all-time series with the Eagles by a count to 26-12. A year ago, the teams split series in Statesboro and Atlanta. The Eagles took game one on their home turf 9-1, but the Jackets claimed a 2-1 win in game two.
