BOCA RATON, Fla. — After opening play three hours later than scheduled and enduring several rain delays, the Georgia Tech softball team (8-4) dropped a pair of games at the FAU Worth Invitational Saturday. The Jackets lost to Southern Illinois, 1-0, to open the day and also fell to Florida International, 2-1, in eight innings. Tech returns to action in bracket play at 9 a.m. Sunday.

In the first game, Southern Illinois picked up the lone run of the game in the second inning, as catcher Katie Jordan scored from second on a double by shortstop Adie Viefhaus.

The Jackets were kept at bay by the Saluki pitchers for the rest of the game, picking up only three hits. Starter Katie Kloess earned the win. Sophomore Erin Voeltz (2-2) took the loss for the Jackets, allowing just four hits and one run in 4.1 innings.

The Florida International contest remained scoreless until the eighth inning, when the Golden Panthers scored a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Jackets would not go down without a fight in the bottom of the inning.

Due to the tie-breaker rule, junior second baseman Felicia Coursey was placed at second base to start the inning. She scored on a double by third baseman Jamie Frost, who went 2-for-3 in the game. Frost advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Tara Knudsen but was unable to score and even the game.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Sallinger (4-2) continued to impress, as she went all eight innings, allowing just seven hits and two runs. She struck out six, while taking her second loss of the season. Against Southern Illinois, she tossed a hitless 2.2 innings, also fanning six.

The Jackets, 1-3 in the tourney, play in Sunday’s first game, which pits the event’s fourth and fifth-seeded teams against each other.
