BOCA RATON, Fla. — After three consecutive one-run losses, the Georgia Tech softball team (9-4) got back in the win column Sunday at the FAU Worth Invitational, defeating Rutgers, 2-1 in nine innings.
Shortstop Tara Knudsen scored the winning run, as she reached home on a throwing error by the Rutgers first baseman. Soraya Reddick reached on a fielder’s choice and Knudsen scored after the throw went past the first baseman.
Freshman Jessica Sallinger went a hitless final three innings, striking out seven to earn her fifth win.
Rutgers had the first scoring opportunity, as it loaded the bases against Tech starter Erin Voeltz in the first inning. However, the Scarlet Knights were unable to scratch, as Voeltz forced first baseman Helen Smith to ground back to her for the final out of the frame.
Rutgers got on the board in the third. Second baseman Brittney Neer led of the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. She later scored on a squeeze bunt by shortstop Meaghan Asselta, giving the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead. The Jackets got third baseman Maritza Valenzuela to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Tech tied the score, 1-1, in the top of the sixth, as second baseman Felicia Coursey led off the inning with a triple, her second hit of the game. She later scored, beating a throw at home, as third baseman Jamie Frost reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Jackets return to action Tuesday when they host Jacksonville State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Glenn Field.
