Tech Run-Rules Boston College in Rubber Match, 10-2 (6)

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (20-19, 4-11 ACC) clinched its second ACC series victory of the season with a 10-2 (6), mercy-rule triumph over Boston College (18-19, 2-10 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets controlled the game from start to finish, bolting out to a 6-0 lead through the first two innings and using an explosive, four-run sixth inning to cut the game short, securing the series.

Junior first baseman Abby Hughes was arguably the most productive Jacket at the plate, producing four RBI through her 2-for-3 day. Most notably, the Leesburg, Ga., native had a pair of two-RBI swings as her single in the second expanded the lead while her double in the sixth clinched the run-rule triumph. Junior right fielder Sara Beth Allen furthered her tear of explosive at-bats as she launched a three-run bomb to propel the White and Gold in front in the bottom of the first. The home run also represented the Jacket slugger’s team-leading ninth dinger on the year and 10th of her career. Junior third baseman Mallorie Black made her own noise at the dish, also contributing to the mercy-rule victory by mirroring Hughes’ two-RBI double in the sixth. The mainstay on the hot corner also did damage on the base path, scoring three runs on the day.

Senior right hander Blake Neleman (7-8) received the win as she nearly tossed her sixth complete game of the season and second of the series. The crafty hurler finished an out shy of the feat as she tallied seven punchouts and allowed two runs on two hits through 5.2 innings of work. Fellow senior righty Chandler Dennis took care of the only batter she faced to conclude Tech’s action in the circle.

How it Happened

Georgia Tech wasted no time getting started as Allen hammered her three-run blast in the bottom of the first. An inning later, junior shortstop Jin Sileo built on the advantage as she led things off with a single, stealing second and later advancing home on a double steal. With the bases walked loaded moments later, Hughes pushed one through the infield to bring in a pair of Yellow Jackets for a 6-0 advantage after two.

The Eagles clawed back in the top of the third with a two-run shot in the top of the third to cut the lead to 6-2, and both sides were quiet for the next couple of innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Georgia Tech put the nail in the coffin with four more runs. Following a pair of walks to open the bottom half, Black came through with her gapper for a double that plated two. After one more walk, Hughes sent the Eagles home with her two-RBI double, securing a 10-2 (6) mercy-rule victory and 2-1 series triumph for the White and Gold.
