ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team comes into the 2012 season as the 23rd ranked team in the country according to the ESPN.com/USA Today poll, Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets are receiving votes (17) in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll.
The Yellow Jackets will take on three Women’s College World Series teams in No. 2/2 Alabama (USA Softball/NFCA), No. 16/11 Oklahoma State and No. 6/5 Oklahoma during the ACC/SEC/Big 12 Challenge and will compete against 15 different schools that earned a spot in the 2011 NCAA Softball Championship in 22 different games during the season.
Other key ranked opponents are No. 9/14 Tennessee who they will face in the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Feb. 24, No. 12/10 Georgia who they will take on twice during the season in a home-and-home series, No. 20/22 LSU and No. 24/23 Louisiana-Lafayette in a three-game, two-day road trip to Louisiana, and No. 20/21 Nebraska who they will see in their first weekend of play.
Other teams that Tech will face off against that are currently receiving votes include North Carolina, San Diego State, Auburn, Florida State, UMass and DePaul.
Tech returns their eight All-American in program history and fifth during the tenure of Sharon Perkins, in Kelsi Wesemanwho will slide over to third base for the 2012 season and continue to bring the hot bat to the middle of the lineup for the Jackets.
Georgia Tech opens the 2012 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. From February 10-12 where they will face off against Pac-12 opponents Oregon State and Arizona, Cal-Poly, San Diego State and close out the tournament against Big 12 opponent Nebraska.
