THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men couldn’t close the gap on league power Florida State on Sunday, and finished in second place overall in the GT Invitational, hosted by the Yellow Jackets this weekend at the GT Aquatic Center. The Tech women held fourth place from wire to wire.

The Seminoles won both the men’s and women’s meets, scoring 2,056 points on the men’s side and 1,673 on the women’s side. Tech was second with 1,201 points, followed by Alabama (751), Emory (270), Miami (67) and Hawai’i (60).

In the women’s meet, Florida Gulf Coast was second (1031.5 points), Miami was third (772), the Jackets were fourth (674), followed by Alabama (435.5), Harvard (418), Emory (172), Hawai’i (102) and Clemson (79).

Sophomore Andrew Kosic put a cap on his strong weekend by bettering his NCAA B-cut from Sunday morning, and sprinting to a second place finish in the men’s 100 free. He was edged at the wall by Florida State’s Paul Murray (42.78), and Kosic’s time of 43.62 was four-tenths off his career best and school record.

The 200 breast was also a crucial event for the Jackets with four swimmers in the A-final. Anton Lagerqvist picked up the victory with his winning time of 1:59.44, while Matthew Vaughan finished a close third 2:01.15. Ricky Lehner was seventh (2:06.65) and Jarrod Blanton was eighth (2:09.34) for Tech.

Tech finished the meet with a second-place finish by the men’s 400 free relay of Eric Chiu, Kosic, Andrew Chetcuti and Nico van Duijn, who were clocked in 2:56.17, trailing a lightning-fast Florida State relay that established an NCAA `A’ cut of 2:53.06.

In the men’s 200 back, Wilson Wei picked up a fifth-place finish (1:50.27), with Kristopher Bryant in seventh (1:51.58). Nicolas Colletti put down a time of 1:50.83, shaving six seconds off his prelim time, and won the B-final.

Also for the Jackets, Michael Kenny brought home a fourth place in the 1,650 free (15:41.12), followed by Zach Tillman in 11th (16:14.86) and Andreas Nilsson in 12th (16:16.47).

For Tech’s women, the 400 free relay of Erika Staskevicius, Lexi Weber, Hailey White and Kate Riley claimed a fourth-place finish as they were clocked in a time of 3:26.49.

Kate Woolbright swam to a sixth-place finish in the 1,650 (16:57.20), then came back to claim a ninth-place finish in the 200 back (2:04.74). Also in the 200 back A- final, Carly Sweeney was 10th in 2:05.00. The 200 back B-final saw Katherine Kerman finish 14th overall (2:06.24) and Sara Williford finish 15th (2:06.32).
