Tech Improves to 7-1 With 54-38 Win Over Tulsa

ATLANTA – Janie Mitchell and Chioma Nnamaka scored 10 points apiece and the Yellow Jacket defense held Tulsa to just 26 percent from the field as Georgia Tech (7-1) defeated the Tulsa Hurricane (6-2), 54-38, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Tech held All-America candidate Jillian Robbins to just four first-half points, and the senior finished the contest with 13 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks against the Jackets.

After trailing by 12 points at halftime, Tulsa used an 8-2 run to begin the second frame, pulling within six points at 15:52 on a layup by Robbins, making the score 26-20. Tech then stretched the lead back to 12 points with a 9-3 run of its own, which was capped by a jumper from Mitchell with 10:22 remaining in the game. Tulsa would pull within six points again at 7:19 on a three-pointer by Tandem Mays, but would get no closer as the Jackets finished off the game on a 17-7 run.

Sophomore point guard Jill Ingram had nine points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds against the Hurricane, and Stephanie Higgs led the Jackets with six rebounds and five steals. Kasha Terry played strong in the middle, finishing with eight points, four rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Overall, Tech outrebounded the Hurricane, 44-41, and held a 14-6 edge in steals, while forcing six more turnovers by Tulsa. The Jackets scored 30 points in the paint on the afternoon, and received 15 points off the bench while holding an opponent to less than 40 points in a game for the fourth time in the last two years.

Tech began the game on a 9-0 run, with six of the nine points coming in the paint, but the Hurricane pulled within one point with 5:12 remaining in the half on a tip-in by Robbins, making the score 13-12. The Jackets held Tulsa scoreless for the rest of the frame, closing the half on a 12-0 run with baskets by Kentrina Wilson, Jessica Williams and Jill Ingram, while Wilson also converted on 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Longwood University at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The game against the Lancers will be the Jackets’ second in three days, and will be broadcast on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network, WREK 91.1 FM in Atlanta, and online at www.wrek.org.
