May 26, 2008

ATLANTA – Making its 22nd NCAA bid in the last 24 years and 24th NCAA appearance overall, Georgia Tech has received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament and will play at Foley Field in Athens, Ga.

Tech (39-19), the No. 2 seed in the Athens regional, opens against the No. 3 seed Louisville (41-19) Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. Friday’s other first-round matchup, scheduled for 3 p.m., pits No. 1 seed Georgia (35-21-1) of the Southeastern Conference against Atlantic Sun foe Lipscomb (31-28), the No. 4 seed.

“We are excited to be headed back to the NCAA Tournament,” said Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall. “We are looking forward to competing in Athens and since it’s in our home state, it will be great for Georgia Tech fans to come over to support us.”

The regional continues Saturday with games slated for 3 p.m. (loser’s bracket) and 7 p.m. (winner’s bracket). Sunday’s games are at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., the latter being the first possible championship game. If a second championship game is necessary, it will be played Monday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Athens regional will be matched up with the champion of the Raleigh Regional, hosted by NC State and also featuring South Carolina, Charlotte and James Madison, in an NCAA Super Regional, scheduled for June 6-8 or June 7-9 at a campus site to be determined.

Georgia Tech has posted a 54-47 record in its 23 years of NCAA play. The Jackets won regionals in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006, advancing to the College World Series in 1994, 2002 and 2006.

All-Session Reserved tickets are $60 with the all-session general admission price set at $50. Both All-Session ticket packages include a ticket to all Athens Regional games, including Game 7 if necessary, and provide fans with a discount off the individual game ticket prices.

All tickets ordered for the regional will be distributed via will-call. Patrons may claim their tickets prior to the regional from the Georgia Athletic Association Ticket Office on Thursday, May 29, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and again on Friday, May 30, from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The Yellow Jackets enter the tournament as the No. 6 team in the nation in the RPI and are the only team in the top-10 not to host a regional this season.
