THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball was unable to prevail in the neck-and-neck battle on the mound, falling 3-2 to North Carolina on Thursday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (26-21, 19-15 ACC) got a tremendous start out of LHP Brant Hurter, who went seven innings and allowed just two runs on six hits. RHP Zach Maxwell held the game tied with an inning of work before the go-ahead run scored on a fielder’s choice RBI in the top of the ninth on LHP Luke Bartnicki (1-2).
Tech was led at the plate by Kevin Parada, who returned to form with a 3-for-4 outing, including the two-out two-RBI blast to put the Jackets on the board. Brad Grenkoski also mashed a ball that just caught the top of the fence to not be a home run for a double.
The Tar Heels (26-20, 18-16 ACC) were paced by RHP Austin Love (7-4), who allowed just two runs on eight hits in a complete game, punching out 15 batters and walking none. At the plate, Danny Serretti led the way with a 2-for-5 outing.
Georgia Tech is back at it Friday, May 21 for a sold-out Game 2 of the series against North Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
