THE FLATS – In its season opener, Georgia Tech men’s tennis claimed a dominating 6-1 win over Furman. The Jackets won five singles and two doubles matches.
The doubles pairing of Rohan Sachdev and Brandon McKinney finished first with a quick 6-3 win over Furman’s Ben Cahill and Alex Han. Elias Shokry and Keshav Chopra play a competitive match against Furman’s Thomas Kennedy and Cole Burnham. The two jackets were down but tied it up 4-4 with a deuce point and took a 6-5 lead, but the pair of Palladins evened the score at 6-6. Shokry and Chopra clinched a 7-6 win in the tiebreak round. The two wins in doubles put Tech up 1-0 against Furman.
In singles play, five Jackets earned their victories in two straight sets. Andres Martin made it a quick match, defeating Furman’s Elijah Poritzky 6-2, 6-2. Freshmen Robert Bauer and Shokry were successful in their singles matches. Bauer took down John Rado 6-4, 6-2 and Shokry beat Connor Laymon 6-4, 6-4.
After being down 0-4 in the first set, Marcus McDaniel came back and claimed an impressive 7-6 victory over Furman’s Emil Westling. McDaniel secured his victory with a 6-2 finish in the second set.
Chopra took his first set against Jerry Barton, winning 6-4. The second set went back and forth, but Chopra eventually took the set in a 7-6 decision after defeating Barton 13-11 in the tiebreaker.
