CARY, N.C. – The #20-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (13-8, 9-5 ACC) defeated #59 Virginia Tech (14-10), 4-0, to advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC Women’s Tennis Tournament at the Cary Tennis Park on Thursday afternoon.
“We played pretty well against a very, very good Virginia Tech team,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “Virginia Tech won yesterday and battled their tails off today. They’ve had injuries and they have their whole team back together so it was a battle. We are fortunate to play well in doubles.”
The Jackets won the doubles point for the 13th time this season and are 12-1 when winning the doubles point in 2014.
The number two doubles team of Natasha Prokhnevska and Muriel Wacker, rolled to an 8-2 victory on court two against Raluca Mita and Carol Khaoun. The #6-ranked duo of Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard clinched the doubles points for the Jackets after defeating Iinca Stoica and Kelly Williford, 8-4.
“Natasha and Rasheeda really got it going for us,” Harmon said. “Muriel won in the middle and Alexa was ahead. So we were getting traction. It was a great experience to get us ready for tomorrow. We have to play Virginia tomorrow which is an excellent team.”
Prokhnevksa then scored the first singles point for the Jackets, defeating Mita in straight-sets. She claimed a 6-2, 6-4, victory to put Tech ahead, 2-0, in the match. Freshman Rasheeda McAdoo was the next Jacket to finish up, taking down Williford, 6-2, 6-4, on court three.
For the second-straight match, Wacker clinched the win for the Yellow Jackets. After rolling to a 6-0 win in set one against Isel Martinez-Marcos, the second set was close. Wacker came back in set two to tie up the set at six-all. She then won the tiebreaker to clinch the first round win and the 14th-straight against the Hokies.
Tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets face #3-seed Virginia at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Follow live stats for the match here.
