THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving team will hit the road for the first time in 2016-17, as the Yellow Jackets will have a full slate of events with not just one, but two meets this weekend in Massachusetts. The Jackets will take on Harvard on Friday, Oct. 7, in a dual meet in Cambridge, Mass., beginning at 3 p.m. and then turnaround to compete in an ACC tri-meet with Boston College and Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
“I am pleased with the way that we opened up the season last week versus Georgia Southern at home,” commented head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “But now we have a bigger challenge this weekend going on the road to swim in two meets on back-to-back days against tough competition. We are looking forward to seeing the progress we have made since last Friday’s meet and to push ourselves once again to compete at our highest level.”
The women’s team is coming off a decisive 156-98 win over Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 30, in which the Yellow Jackets had the top time in all but one event for the dual meet.
Senior co-captain Andrea Demick set a new personal best mark en route to a first-place finish in the 3-meter diving event last Friday, while freshman Carly Doi earned her first intercollegiate win with a first-place finish in the 1-meter dive. Sophomore Iris Wang touched the wall first in both the 50 free and 150 free events, while redshirt-senior Chiara Ruiu took first-place in the 150 yard breast and turned in the top time in the 200 IM, only to be exhibitioned.
A trio of Tech newcomers in Kaitlin Kitchens, Emily Ilgenfritz and Chloe Miller each picked up a win for the Yellow Jackets in the 50 fly, 250 free and 150 fly, respectively, versus the Eagles, while Sara Gilbert recorded a first-place finish in both the 50 and 150 back events.
The men’s team, which is ranked No. 36 overall in the CollegeSwimming.com poll and received votes in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) national top-25 poll, will kick-off its 2016-17 season this weekend at Harvard and Boston College.
The Yellow Jackets return two NCAA qualifiers in Moises Loschi and Alex Kimpel, who holds the school record in the 200 breast with a time of 1:54.91, as well as sophomore Rodrigo Quadros Correia who set a new Tech record in the 100 back with a time of 47.13 last year at the 2016 ACC Championships.
Along with Loschi, Kimpel and Correia, co-captain Ben Southern and fellow returners Brad Oberg, Colt Williamson and Noah Harasz all return this season after recording top-15 place individual finishes in their respective events last year at the 2016 ACC Championships.
Both meets will be the season openers for the Yellow Jacket opponents. Friday afternoon’s contest versus Harvard will be the first for the Crimson in 2016-17, while both Pittsburgh and host Boston College will be hitting the water for the first time competitively this season on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the ACC tri-meet.
