Swimming & Diving to Host Notre Dame in a Two-Day ACC Dual Meet

Oct. 20, 2016

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimming and diving will host the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in an ACC dual meet on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22, at the McAuley Aquatic Center. The two-day meet will be the annual Breast Cancer Awareness meet for the Yellow Jackets who will dawn pink swim caps for the cause.

Friday’s action will start at 4 p.m. ET, while day two of the dual meet will begin on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

“We are looking forward to racing a great ACC team in Notre Dame this weekend in a two day format,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “This meet is of special importance to us as we support breast cancer awareness. We have several members of the team, both past and present, whom have been touched by cancer and this is a small way that we can help create awareness.”

Ranked No. 22 nationally by CollegeSwimming.com, the Tech men’s team is 2-0 on the season with wins over Pittsburgh and Boston College on Oct. 8.

The Yellow Jackets have been led thus far this season by sophomore Rodrigo Quadros Correia, Moises Loschi, Ben Southern and Alex Kimpel. Correia has posted the top times this season for the Yellow Jackets in the 100 free (44.73) and 200 free (1:38.04), while Loschi recorded the top times in the 500 free (4:34.89), 1,000 free (9:37.22) and the 100 breast (55.64). Southern turned in the top times for Tech in the 100 fly (49.16) and the 200 fly (1:50.16), while Kimpel has two top times on the year in the 200 breast (2:07.32) and the 200 IM (1:55.37).

On the diving boards, Matt Casillas has led the way with top scores of 307.15 in the 1-meter dive and 314.75 in the 3-meter dive.

The Yellow Jackets’ women’s team is 2-1 on the year and is coming off a split versus Pittsburgh and Boston College in an ACC double dual meet on Oct. 8 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Transfer Kaitlin Kitchens turned in a time of 23.51 in the 50 free last time out, which is top on the season and ranks 10th all-time in Tech history in the 50 free event. Kitchens also has the top Tech time in the 100 fly (56.54).

Returners Iris Wang has the best times of the year for the Yellow Jackets in the 100 free (51.21) and 200 free (1:52.30), while co-captain Chiara Ruiu turned in the top times in the 200 breast (2:21.75) and the 200 IM (2:07.94). Florina Ilie (100 breast – 1:05.25), Maddie Paschal (100 back – 57.23) and Alex Rieger (200 back – 2:02.43) also lead Tech in a number of events this year, while newcomer Emily Ilgenfritz has made an immediate impact in the Yellow Jacket lineup with top times for the team in the 500 free (5:05.79), 1,000 free (10:26.15) and 200 fly (2:07.11).

Both Andrea Demick and Carly Doi continue to lead the Yellow Jackets in diving, as Demick has the top score in the 3-meter springboard dive at 288.30, while Doi holds the top score at 278.85 in the 1-meter dive.

Notre Dame is off to a strong start this season in the pool and on the diving boards, as both Irish teams are 3-0 overall this season in dual meet action.

Both the men’s and women’s teams opened up the season with wins over Michigan State and Iowa in a rare long course meet on Sept. 30, before sweeping the field on both sides at the Denis Stark Relays on Oct. 7.

On Oct. 8, the men’s team defeated Oakland University in dual meet action, while the women’s team beat Indiana State at home in Rolfs Aquatic Center in head-to-head competition to remain undefeated on the year.

Fans will receive free pink stickers and shakers on day one of the competition on Friday afternoon (4 p.m.), while on day two of the meet on Saturday morning (11 a.m.) pink donuts will be available as part of the cause to support breast cancer awareness.
