Sweden Drops Opening Round Game at European Championships

July 15, 2010

Danielle Hamilton-Carter scored five points and Frida Fogdemark added a basket but the U20 Swedish National Team dropped its opening round game to Latvia, 87-41 Thursday in Liepāja, Latvia.

Hamilton-Carter and Fogdemark were both in the starting lineup for the game against the host nation’s team. Hamilton-Carter, who played a team high 29 minutes, grabbed a pair of rebounds and blocked a shot for Sweden. Fogdemark had two assists and two boards in 27 minutes for her home country.

Sweden could not handle the Latvians’ stifling defense, which held the Scandinavians to just 26 percent shooting from the field while blocking 10 shots and out-rebounding Sweden 63-24. The one sore point for Latvia was hitting just 6-of-26 (23 percent) from long range.

The U20 Swedish team will look to rebound against Ukraine Friday. Ukraine dropped its opening round game to Russia, 79-74.
