Steve Marcelle Paces Track & Field on Day Two of NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Members of the Georgia Tech women and men’s track and field team’s continued competition in their respective events on the second day of the 2010 NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round meet held at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T Friday.

Tech was led on the day by senior Steve Marcelle, who punched his ticket to the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. after posting a mark of 59 feet, 10.5 inches in the shot put. The mark was the seventh best on the day and automatically qualified Marcelle for one of the 12 spots from the East Region in the event. Marcelle will now compete for the third consecutive year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put in two weeks and will look to improve on his fifth place finish from last season.

In other action for the men’s team, senior Dave Ford qualified for tomorrow’s semi-final in the 110m hurdles after crossing the finish line in 14.14 to finish 18th overall, while junior Antonio McKay Jr. failed to qualify for the NCAA Outdoors in the 400m dash after placing 18th in the semi’s with a time of 46.83.

On the women’s side, senior Alana Clooten posted a mark of 176 feet, five inches in the hammer throw to finish 26th overall, while junior Joanna Wright had a clearance of 12 feet, 9.5 inches in the pole vault to place 15th overall.

On the track, Melaine Akwule failed to qualify for tomorrow’s semi-final in the 100m hurdles after posting a time of 13.57. The time, however, was a new personal best for the sophomore. In the semi-finals of the 400m dash, Tiffany Grant finished 22nd overall in 54.70, while in the semi’s of the 400m hurdles, Leslie Njoku finished 20th overall in a time of 59.26.

Action concludes tomorrow in Greensboro with things getting underway at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s discus.
