Spring Practice Update #6

April 3, 2013

Date: Wednesday, April 3

Practice: No. 6 (of 14)

Dress: Full pads

Practice notes: Georgia Tech practiced for just under two hours in full pads at Rose Bowl Field and the Brock Indoor Practice Facility… with Corey Dennis in a red jersey (injured) today, redshirt freshman Micheal Summers was the only scholarship wide receiver in practice… Summers is getting “a ton” of reps this spring and walk-on WR Jamie Alvarez made a nice catch for a first down today on a pass from Vad Lee… injuries have been an issue this spring – of Tech’s 15 returning starters, seven were in red jerseys on Wednesday… when asked by the media if Saturday’s scrimmage would be open to the public, Paul Johnson joked: “I’ll let you know via my Twitter account.”

Position battle: The Yellow Jackets have significant depth on the offensive line… four starters return, including three that are fifth-year seniors – OT Ray Beno, OG Will Jackson and C Jay Finch… junior Shaquille Mason is also a returning starter… other returning letterwinners on the O-line: Catlin Alford, Morgan Bailey, Trey Braun and Bryan Chamberlain Freddie Burden and Chase Roberts are among those who were redshirted last season.

On the April 19 spring game: In past years, Johnson has been concerned about having enough healthy players to have a full-fledged spring game. While he doesn’t have that concern this year – “We have enough players (to play the game), but if you have enough injuries the quality of the game may not be what you’d like to see.” NFL Jackets: Demaryius Thomas and Morgan Burnett stopped by the football office today and spent some time with Johnson. Thomas is serving as a judge in the slam dunk contest Thursday night at McCamish Pavilion.

The ATL: Living, working or studying in Atlanta has its advantages. Paul Johnson attended the Braves season opener and will likely attend the Final Four this weekend. Several players plan to attend the free concerts connected with the Final Four this weekend, all within a mile from campus. Even the student managers get a chance to work the practices and games at the Final Four.
