San Jose, Costa Rica – Georgia Tech’s women’s basketball team recorded a pair of victories on the first day of game action in Costa Rica, led by freshman Janie Mitchell, who recorded double figures in scoring in both contests. The Yellow Jackets began the day by defeating the University of Costa Rica by a score of 70-32 in the first game of the day and then won 52-33 against Club Taca of San Jose.

Game One:

Freshmen Janie Mitchell and Chioma Nnamaka scored 11 points each and junior center Kasha Terry contributed 10, all in the second half, to lead Georgia Tech to a 70-32 victory over the University of Costa Rica in the first game of the Yellow Jackets’ trip to Costa Rica.

The Yellow Jackets built a 46-18 halftime lead and allowed just three field goals through the final two quarters to the Costa Rican team in Georgia Tech’s first game of the day, led by Nnamaka, who scored all 11 of her points in the first two quarters.

Janie Mitchell paced the Yellow Jackets at the free-throw line, converting on all seven attempts, as the team went 16-for-26 from the charity stripe in the contest. She also led the team with nine rebounds while recording two steals against the University. Terry recorded eight rebounds while Cheytoria Phillips had seven boards and Daphne Mitchell, six.

The Jackets shot 43.5 percent from the field, led by a 5-of-7 performance by Terry while Nnamaka was 5-for-9 and Harpring, 2-for-3.

Stephanie Higgs contributed seven points to the game, followed by Shantrell Moss and Daphne Mitchell with six points apiece. Jill Ingram, Megan Harpring, Jessica Williams and Phillips all scored four points, and Ashley Guerrant rounded out the scoring with a field goal and a free throw.

Game Two:

Harpring led all scorers with 12 points while Janie Mitchell contributed 10 as the Yellow Jackets overcame a sluggish third quarter and rules changes at halftime to down Club Taca in the second contest of the day, 52-33. Georgia Tech benefited from tight defense, forcing 26 Taca turnovers, which led to 25 of the Yellow Jackets’ 52 points.

Williams, the top offensive rebounder in the ACC a year ago, led the Jackets with eight total rebounds in the contest while scoring four points and recording two steals. Ingram led the Tech defense with six steals after pacing the Jackets with five in the first game of the day.

After leading 24-12 at the half, the Yellow Jackets scored just six points in the third quarter but held Taca to only two after changing at halftime from the typical women’s ball in United States’ play to the FIBA men’s ball, which is used in all international play.

Nnamaka scored seven points against Taca, Ingram added five, while Terry, Moss and Daphne Mitchell added four apiece. Higgs rounded out the Yellow Jacket scoring with two points in the game.

Georgia Tech will return to action with an 8 p.m. (MST) game against the Guatemalan International Team.
