MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

• Opening tip: won by Charlotte (Jackets have won eight of 12 opening tips this season)

TEAM NOTES

• Georgia Tech made its first non-injury-related changes in its starting lineup of the season, inserting Chris Bolden and Robert Sampson in the starting five for Quinton Stephens and Demarco Cox, respectively, along with Marcus Georges-Hunt, Travis Jorgenson and Charles Mitchell. Tech had used the same starting lineup for the previous eight games – Cox, Georges-Hunt, Jorgenson, Mitchell and Stephens.

• Tech led Charlotte, 28-20, at the half. Tech is 7-1 this season when leading at the half, 40-17 under Brian Gregory.

• Only Rhode Island and Northwestern (18 each) scored fewer points against Tech in the first half this season than did Charlotte.

• Tech out-rebounded Charlotte, 35-26, and has won the boards in 11 of 12 games this season (tied Northwestern). Tech improved to 8-3 when out-rebounding the opponent this season and 45-28 when doing so under Brian Gregory.

• Tech had 15 offensive rebounds and converted them into 17 second-chance points. Tech ranks seventh nationally in offensive rebounds per game.

• Tech has yielded 36 threes in 164 attempts (22 pct.) in its nine wins this season (Charlotte was 1-for-13), 29 threes in 66 attempts (43.9 pct.) in its three losses this season.

• Tech utilized nine players against Charlotte, and seven of them scored. Brian Gregory has used at least nine players in every game this season, at least 10 in six games.

• Tech scored fewer than 70 points for the eighth time this season and is 6-2 in those games. Conversely, Tech allowed fewer than 70 points for the ninth time and is 8-1 in those games.

• Tech won for the first time this season (1-2 record) when trailing at the 5-minute mark of the second half. Tech is 7-46 when trailing at the 5-minute mark of the second half under Brian Gregory.

• Tech went 14-for-16 from the free throw line for a season-high 84.6-percent success rate. Tech had been averaging more than 23 attempts and 14 points per game from the FT stripe, but has gone just 30-for-39 in its last three games (76.9 pct.).

• Tech has averaged 13.3 assists over its last six games, only 10.6 per game in its first six games.

• Tech was 7-for-18 combined on three-point field goals in consecutive wins against Rhode Island and Northwestern. Since then, in five games, the Jackets are 16-for-97 (16.6 pct.).

 

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

Marcus Georges-Hunt scored a career-high 25 points against Charlotte, eclipsing his previous best of 23 last Feb. 1 at Wake Forest. His nine field goals also beat his previous best of eight set four times. He went 9-for-16 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

• Georges-Hunt reached double digits for the ninth time this season and for the 49th time in 76 career games at Tech.

• Georges-Hunt went 7-for-7 from the free throw line and has made his last 15 attempts in a row over Tech’s last three games. He is 22-for-24 in his last four games and has hit 74.5 pct. for the season).

• Georges-Hunt also corralled seven rebounds and has 15 in his last two games.

Charles Mitchell recorded his third double-double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and has eight double-doubles in his collegiate career. It was his 21st double-digit scoring effort and 15th double-figure rebound game.

• Tech’s three primary big men (Cox, Mitchell, Sampson) contributed 20 points.

• Starting point guard Travis Jorgenson had five assists and just one turnover, continuing an impressive run. He has 20 assists and just three turnovers in his last four games, 26 and six over his last six games, and 35 and 14 for the season. Point guard teammate Josh Heath has 44 assists and 18 turnovers for the season. Combined, they have a 2.47-to-1 assist-turnover ratio.

• Jorgenson made his 10th start of the season at point guard and played a career-high 26 minutes. He has played 25, 24, 25 and 26 minutes in Tech’s last four games. He moved back into the lineup against Marquette after missing the Alabama A&M game with soreness in his surgically repaired knee and coming off the bench against IPFW.

Chris Bolden scored eight points, including multiple threes for only the second time this season. He is 17-for-27 inside the arc this season.
