Opening Statement

“You have to give a ton of credit to Mark (Gottfried) and the job he’s done with that team. They had a lot of veterans coming back from last year’s team and the great run that they had when they were playing about as good as any team in the country. Add a couple high quality freshmen to the mix and they’re a really tough team to beat.

“We knew how well we had to play and I thought we did a good job for about 32 minutes.

On NC State

“They’re an exceptional team and they share the ball really well, move the ball well and they’re so good in transition.”

On NC State’s transition offense

“They move the ball so well in transition. Because Howell and Leslie are so good on the glass they can send other players down the court when the shot goes up and then they can have Scott Wood trailing the play, so you have to account for him.”

NC State head coach Mark Gottfried

General comments

“We did a nice job getting the ball where we wanted it late. We made some really big shots. Scott Wood obviously had a couple and Lorenzo (Brown) made some too. I thought defensively in the second half, we were a lot better.

“We guarded them pretty well in the second half and they were largely only scoring on second shots. We have to clean that up. Our defense in the second half was the difference in the game.

“Our offensive execution late was very good. I see a lot of different guys on the stat sheet. I see that T.J. Warren was 0-for-1 from the field, but defensively around the basket he played really well for us. He gave up a lot of size. He was playing against a bigger guy.

“All our guys played well defensively. I liked where our defense was tonight. We’ve talked about sustaining it for longer periods of time, and I thought we did that in the second half.

On rebounding

“We rebounded the ball better, except for a few stretches. A lot of the ones they were getting were ones that bounced out long. We have to do a better job of that.”

On conditioning

“Bob Alejo gets a lot of credit for the things we are doing. Our team is in great shape in conditioning. There’s also a mental toughness. What happens with a team like this is that we have played good teams throughout the preseason and now it really pays off.”
