Solomon Breaks 5000m School Record in Strong Second Day

March 31, 2018

Daily Results: Florida Relays | Stanford Invite | San Francisco State Distance Carnival

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech outdoor track and field continued its busy weekend by having student-athletes compete in the second day of the Florida Relays, while also kicking off action in the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

The Yellow Jackets set four personal records on the night, including the men’s 5000m school record, as well as recording multiple ACC outdoor qualifying times and top conference marks.

Georgia Tech wraps up action on Saturday, March 31 when they conclude all three meets around the country.

Men’s Highlights

Florida Relays –

Avery Bartlett led the way for Georgia Tech in the Sunshine State on Friday, winning a neck-and-neck race in the 800m with an ACC qualifying time of 1:47.76 – less than half a second shy of his personal record. Bartlett’s performance is the fastest in the conference by more than two seconds, eclipsing teammates Andres Littig (first) and Gabriel Darosa’s (second) top conference marks.

In the long jump, William Solomon set a season-best with a fifth-place leap of 7.29 meters. Daniel Pietsch made his outdoor debut in the 400, finishing eighth in the event with a time of 46.67 – good for an ACC qualifying mark.

In the 4×400 relay prelims, the team of Ty Brooks, Lionel Jones, Pietsch and Benjamin Jean turned in a fine performance, running a 3:11.61 to finish eighth and advanced to Saturday’s finals.

Stanford Invitational –

Nahom Solomon raced out to a historic pace in the highly competitive 5000m invitational event, breaking the Georgia Tech program record with a 13:51.92 performance. Solomon’s ACC qualifying, 12th-place outing shattered the 46-year-old school record of 14:02.4 that was set by Georgia Tech Hall of Famer Joel Majors in 1972.

Both the indoor and outdoor 5000m school records now belong to Solomon after being broken this year.

Meanwhile in the 3000m steeplechase, Alex Grady finished ninth overall with a time of 9:07.59.

Women’s Highlights

Florida Relays –

Jeanine Williams once again surpassed her own season-best in the 100m hurdles, finishing second in the highly competitive field with a blistering ACC qualifying time of 13.15 – four-tenths of a second faster than her time at the Yellow Jacket Invite to open the season. Her performance keeps her at the second-fastest time in the NCAA East Region and in the top 10 nationally.

Marinice Bauman also continues her fine outdoor season by matching her season-best exactly with an ACC qualifying time of 1:00.22 to finish seventh overall in the 400m hurdles. Then in the 3000m steeplechase, Courtney Naser crushed her previous personal record, finishing ninth with a time of 10:43.16 – more than nine seconds faster than her old record.

Stanford Invitational –

Freshman Nicole Fegans turned in an impressive time of 16:47.42 to finish second in the fourth section of the 5000m on Friday night. Fegans’ performance currently ranks as the fastest time in the ACC thus far and a top-10 time nationally.

Meanwhile, Hailey Gollnick also finished sixth in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:37.66
