THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (23-20, 11-14 ACC) wraps up the 2014 regular season at No. 6 Florida State for a three game series at JoAnne Graf Field. The Yellow Jackets and Seminoles (44-6, 21-3) square off in a doubleheader on Saturday at 5 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 12 p.m.
Series History.
Saturday marks 75th meeting between the two teams and Florida State leads 48-26. Last season, Georgia Tech dropped a doubleheader against Florida State, 4-1 (8) and 8-0 (6).
Georgia Tech (23-20, 11-14)
The Jackets are 5-2 against ranked opponents this season and they are coming off a reeling 8-0 run-rule victory against Kennesaw State. Tech exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Owls.
The Jackets start six players currently batting above .300 led by Ashley Thomas’ .403 hitting clip and as a team Georgia Tech is batting 309. Thomas also leads the team in hits (54) and runs (44), averaging more than one run per game.
Alysha Rudnik leads the squad with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 25 walks, while senior Hayley Downs is tops with 15 sacrifice bunts and owns 20 of Tech’s 65 total stolen bases.
Excelling in ACC action
Six Yellow Jackets are batting above .300 in conference play, including three Jackets batting above .400. Maddie Lionberger is hitting .443 in ACC games, Ashley Thomas is hitting .407 and Samantha Pierannunzi is at .400.
NCAA Top 50
Georgia Tech is ranked in the top 50 in four NCAA statistical categories (as of April 24). The Jackets are No. 40 in stolen bases per game (1.48), No. 41 in triples per game (0.24), No. 42 in double plays per game (0.38) and No. 48 in batting average (.305).
