March 26, 2002

ATLANTA – Having already won its most games since the 1996 season, the Georgia Tech softball team (27-9, 0-0 ACC) will open conference play Tuesday when the Jackets host Maryland for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Glenn Field.

Tech defeated Maryland Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Buzz Classic at the Al Bishop Softball Complex in Marietta. The Jackets posted a dramatic 2-1 win in eight innings, as right fielder Soraya Reddick beat a throw home to score the winning run.

Jackets starter Erin Voeltz went eight strong innings, earning her eighth win innings. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run against Maryland.

Terrapin pitcher Amanda Bettker was also solid, giving up just one earned run on three hits in 7.1 innings.

Tech split its doubleheader at Maryland a year ago, taking the second game, 4-3. The Terps won game one, 2-0. The Jackets dropped a pair to Maryland in the last meeting at Glenn Field in 2000.

The Jackets trail the all-time series, 4-15.
