Softball Hosts #17/19 Georgia Wednesday At 1:00

April 8, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Softball Team (17-26) will host arch-rival No. 17/19 Georgia (35-11) for a doubleheader on Wednesday at Glenn Field. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m. and fans entering the park will receive a free Chick-fil-a sandwich whiles supplies last. In addition, the first 100 fans will receive a GT Koozie. The Yellow Jackets are 7-15 all-time against the Bulldogs, but have won four of the last five match-ups, including a sweep in Athens last season for the first time in school history.

“Georgia has had a great season and we are looking forward to the challenge tomorrow,” head coach Sharon Perkins said. “This is a great rivalry and should be a couple of exciting games. With our baseball team playing Georgia later that evening, I hope as many fans as possible can come out and support us and help provide a great atmosphere at Glenn Field.”

Tech has won 14 straight non-conference home games after sweeping Western Carolina last Thursday at Glenn Field. Both teams are looking to bounce back after weekend sweeps in conference road trips. The Jackets were swept by NC State while Georgia was 0-3 against Tennessee.

Tech senior Savannah Brown had a two-run single in the sixth inning of game three against NC State last weekend breaking the all-time ACC record of 181 set by Virginia’s Sara Larquier. Senior Aileen Morales leads the club this year in batting at .349. She is now 33-for-34 in stolen base attempts after being thrown out for the first time this season last weekend against the Wolfpack. Morales also has 30 runs scored, four doubles, four triples, four home runs and 22 RBI. Senior Brittany Barnes and freshman Jessica Weaver lead the team with seven home runs apiece, while Brown has a team-high 25 RBI.

In the circle, senior Whitney Humphreys is 8-13 with a 2.12 ERA. She has four shutouts, including two straight at home. Opponents are hitting at a .222 clip off of Humphreys and she has 101 strikeouts and 46 walks in 128.2 innings. Last year, Humphreys allowed just one run in picking up a win against the Bulldogs. Overall in her career, she is 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA against Georgia.
