THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (5-12, 1-3 ACC) fell 8-4 to the Boston College Eagles (15-9, 1-0) Friday afternoon in the Yellow Jackets’ ACC home opener.
How It Happened
In the bottom of the first, Samantha Pierannunzi drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Kelsey Chisholm’s ACC-leading sixth sacrifice hit. Draven Sonnon reached on a Boston College error, and back-to-back singles by Jessica Kowalewicz and Katie Krzus scored Pierannunzi and Sonnon, giving Tech a 2-0 lead.
Boston College put up four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Jackets got one of those back in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a double off the bat of Maddie Lionberger and an RBI-single from Chisholm to bring her in.
The Eagles tacked on a run in the top of the sixth to go up 5-3, and added three runs in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead.
The Jackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs thanks to back-to-back singles by Sonnon and Courtney Ziese, followed by a walk to Morgan Taylor. Tech pushed a run across after a Boston College miscue on a ball hit by Krzus to trim the Eagles’ lead to 8-4, but the Eagles held on for the win.
Emily Anderson (4-8) suffered the loss after throwing a complete game. Boston College relief pitcher Allyson Frei (9-5) earned the win.
Quote
“We have to play sharper,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We’ve got to execute in clutch hitting situations. I don’t think we were on our A game defensively and they capitalized on our mistakes today. I thought we did well at the plate and we made adjustments on their pitchers. We’ve got to come back tomorrow and be cleaner all the way around.”
