MARIETTA, Ga. (March 25) – Georgia Tech defeated Tennessee Tech, 5-4, in eight innings in its final game of pool play Saturday night in the Buzz Classic, but the Yellow Jackets did not advance to the bracket portion of the 25-team tournament at the Al Bishop Softball Complex.
Beth Warren scored the winning run on a wild pitch with nobody out in the eighth inning against Tennessee Tech (18-18), which completed a comeback from a 4-0 deficit and improved the Yellow Jackets’ record to 17-21. Anne Knobbe, the ACC’s leading hitter, belted her 14th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth inning, and drove home the game-tying run for Tech in the seventh on a ground out.
Tiffany Goodman (8-12) earned the pitching victory for Tech, while Adrienne Fortmann took the loss. Katie Maroon’s two-run homer in the fourth helped stake the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets, 2-2 in the tournament, lost to Florida A&M, 4-2, in their third game of pool play Saturday afternoon. Tonya Minick and Kim Browning had RBI singles in the fifth inning for Florida A&M to snap a 2-2 tie. The Rattlers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Jackets tied the game in the fourth on RBI singles from Lindsay Wood (3-for-3) and Susanne Miller.
Amber Alford (12-6) picked up the win after scattering seven hits. Jamie Smith (9-9) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in six innings.
The top 12 teams in pool play advanced to the single-elimination bracket portion of the tournament, which began Saturday night and culminates with the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday. Southwest Missouri State (4-0), East Carolina (4-0), Florida Atlantic (4-0) and Evansville (3-1) earned the top four seeds, with Connecticut, Tennessee Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Florida International, Illinois-Chicago, North Carolina, Maryland and Florida A&M filling out the field.
Georgia Tech returns to action 2 p.m. Tuesday against Brown at Glenn Field.
