Greenville, NC – The Georgia Tech softball team (24-27, 3-7 SASA) split a doubleheader with East Carolina (48-23, 3-7 SASA) by the scores of 0-8 and 3-1.

The Pirates dominated the Jackets in game one, winning in just five innings by the score of 8-0. East Carolina scored its first run as Kisha Shepperson scored from third on a double steal inning as Jessica Critcher took second. Critcher then scored on a double from Angela Manzo. East Carolina added to its lead in the second as they scored three runs in the inning on a hit from Manzo and a Yellow Jacket error. With a 5-0 lead, the Pirates scored the final runs needed to end the game in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings as they received an RBI from Manzo, to score Beth Bridger who had reached on a double, from Hillary Halpern who plated Eva Herron and from pinch-hitter Angela Gill who drove in Halpern.

East Carolina pitcher Laurie Davidson (27-12) threw a complete-game two-hitter as the only offensive threat the Jackets posed occured in the first inning when Erin Hawley and Tara Knudsen reached on back to back singles with two outs. In the top of the fifth, the Jackets put runners on second and third when Ellen Styer walked and Jennifer Biggers was hit by a pitch, but Kori Jacobson grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

Tiffany Goodman received the loss (8-8) pitching 1.1 innings and allowing five runs. Mimi Utt came in to work the final three innings of the game and allowed three runs to score.

Tech’s offense came alive in the second game as Jamie Frost led the contest off with a single. Styer recorded a sacrifice hit and moved Frost to second, who then scored on a single from Erin Hawley and a throwing error from Angela Manzo. The Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the second as Halpern received a lead-off walk, was moved to second on a sacrifice from Kristen Johnson, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored on a single from Alexis Hoegh. But, the Jackets struck again in the top of the third as Frost led the inning off with a single, moved to second when Styer reached base on an error from Herron, and then scored on a single recorded by Soraya Reddick. An insurance run was added in the top of the fourth as Jennifer Biggers reached on a single, and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Susanne Miller. Erin Glantz moved Biggers to third on a single down the third base line, and then scored when Frost recorded her third hit of the game.

Freshman Erin Voeltz earned her twelfth win on the season as she pitched a complete game, while Lisa Pagnani received the loss. Voeltz held the Pirates to just three hits in the game and struck out two and improved her earned run average to 1.76 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Friday when they will take on Maryland in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Raleigh, NC.
