Softball Drops Doubleheader to Virginia

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (18-29, 4-12 ACC) dropped a pair of games, 6-0 and 13-1 (5), to Virginia (18-29, 7-10) Saturday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The Jackets take on the Cavaliers in the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. on Alumni Day. All-American and four-time All-ACC First Team Selection, Kelsi Weseman, will throw out the first pitch.

Game 1: Virginia 6, Georgia Tech 0
Virginia was quick out of the gate with three runs on three hits in the opening frame. The Cavaliers tacked on an extra run in the fourth on a solo shot to left to give Virginia a 4-0 lead. A pair of runs in the sixth put the Cavaliers up 6-0.

Samantha Pierannunzi drew a pair of walks, while Courtney Ziese, Maddie Lionberger and Kaylee Ellebracht each singled for Georgia Tech.

Jenna Goodrich (7-15) suffered the loss, while Virginia’s Erika Osherow (13-18) earned the win.

Game 2: Virginia 13, Georgia Tech 1 (5)
With two outs, Courtney Ziese’s season-best 10th home run to left gave Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Virginia answered with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.  

The Cavaliers tacked on six runs in the third inning and added four runs in the fourth for the 13-1 lead.

For Georgia Tech, Kelsey Chisholm and Maddie Lionberger each doubled, while Katie Krzus added a hit and a walk for the Jackets. Pierannunzi drew her team-leading 27th walk in game two.

Morgan Taylor (1-1) was pinned with the loss after throwing 3.2 innings, splitting pitching duties with Colleen Darragh, who threw 1.1 innings. Virginia’s Lacy Smith (3-8) earned the win.
