Softball Continues Home Stand With UGA, JSU, BC

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team continues its 11-game home stand with games against Georgia, Jacksonville State and Boston College this week at Mewborn Field.

The Yellow Jackets will start their week off with a tough rivalry match against No. 8 Georgia on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. followed by a Thursday night meeting with Jacksonville State at 6 p.m. Tech will wrap up its week with an ACC weekend series against Boston College on Saturday (1 p.m./3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.)

The Georgia game will be the launch of the softball team’s month long campaign to raise money for breast cancer research on the behalf of Amy Hosier, a softball alum who is currently battling the disease herself. Pink t shirts, visors and replica Hosier jerseys will be available at the game. For more info on Hosier go to AmysAngels21.com.

The game against Georgia will also be a gold out for all Tech fans. So make sure to wear your gold.

The meeting will between Tech and Georgia will be the 30th between the two teams, who first met in Georgia’s inaugural season of softball in 1997. The game will also be the 10th for Sharon Perkins as Head Coach of the Yellow Jackets, after leaving Athens for Atlanta in 2006. Georgia holds a 20-9 series lead, but is just 5-4 since Perkins took over on the Flats.

Georgia is currently ranked eighth in the country, falling one spot from last week, and has a record of 21-3 entering its game with the Jackets. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 2-1 weekend at Mississippi State, in their first conference action of the year. They are led by Ashley Pauly and Kristyn Sandberg who have amassed 47 hits, seven home runs and 41 RBIs between the duo.

Tech and Jacksonville State have met eight times previously on the diamond with Tech earning the victory every time. The last meeting between the two teams came at the 2011 Buzz Classic, a 4-3 victory for Tech. The Yellow Jackets are 3-0 all time at Mewborn Field when facing off against the Gamecocks.

Jacksonville State is 7-14 heading into its meeting with Georgia Tech. Led by Shelby Holley who is batting .391 on the year with 25 hits, 11 home runs and 19 RBI, the Gamecocks are coming off of a 3-2 week which saw a couple losses to Georgia State and a sweep of Eastern Illinois.

Tech’s second ACC opponent of the season will be Boston College who enters the weekend with a 16-6 record. This will be the first ACC play of the weekend for the Eagles who went 15-5 in tournament play this season and 1-1 at Stetson.

Boston College is led by Ali Lynette-Krech who boasts a .439 batting average with 25 hits, six for doubles as well as Nicole D’Argento who is currently batting .366 with 26 hits, two doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI on the year.

Tech is 15-2 against Boston College under the tutelage of Coach Perkins and are currently on a nine-game winning streak against the Eagles dating back to April 4, 2009.
