Six Yellow Jackets Named To 2008 All-ACC Academic Softball Team

July 31, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Seniors Savannah Brown and Aileen Morales, juniors Whitney Haller and Blair Shimandle as well as freshmen Christy Jones and Jessica Weaver were each named to the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Softball Team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford. The Yellow Jackets tied Maryland for the most honorees in the league with six apiece.

For Haller and Shimandle, this marks the third time in as many years that they have earned this recognition. Morales made the team for the second straight year while Brown, Jones and Weaver pick up their first award.

Ten All-ACC honorees this past season were named to the team as well as five All-ACC Tournament honorees. Seven student-athletes on this year’s team were named to the 2007 list.

All eight ACC schools that sponsor softball were represented on this year’s team with Georgia Tech and Maryland each placing six members. Florida State and Virginia each placed five on the team while North Carolina and ACC Champion Virginia Tech each had three. Rounding out the team were student-athletes from Boston College and North Carolina State, which each had one honoree.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career. The voting committee also considers athletic achievement and game participation when selecting the team.
