THE FLATS – With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, Chandler Simpson tripled to the left center gap to clear the bases and power No. 11 Georgia Tech to a 9-6 win and sweep over Wright State on Sunday afternoon at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (3-0) battled back and forth through the early innings, with Tech scoring on sacrifice flies from Andrew Jenkins and Tres Gonzalez. Leading the offense would be Jake DeLeo who launched his first home run of the season with two outs in the second inning before knocking an RBI double to left center in the sixth. Simpson finished with two hits and a stolen base
On the mound, freshman RHP Aeden Finateri received the start and managed his first 4.0 collegiate innings well, allowing just four earned runs and striking out five. LHP Sam Crawford then came in for the next 2.0 innings, surrendering a solo home run, but nothing more. LHP Joseph Mannelly (1-0) got the victory with 2.0 one-hit innings and three punchouts to set up RHP Dawson Brown for his first career save – one hit, two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Raiders (0-3) were led by Alec Sayre, who had three hits and two doubles. RHP Josh Laisure (0-1) received the loss.
Georgia Tech continues its busy start to the season of eight games in 10 days when it heads on the road to face in-state foe Georgia Southern on Tuesday, Feb. 22. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and WREK 91.1 FM.
