ATLANTA – The Athens Olympic Opening Ceremonies will commence on Thursday afternoon with the competition already underway in Athens, Greece. Junior Chaunte Howard, sophomore Vesna Stojanovska, freshman Onur Uras, Stephon Marbury (1996), Jorge Oliver (1999-2003), Leo Salinas (1998-2002) and Angelo Taylor (1997-98), will be competing at the Summer Olympics.
Sophomore Vesna Stojanovska (Macedonia) will be the first Yellow Jacket to compete at the Athens Olympics on Sunday at 4:42 a.m. ET in the women’s 400-meter freestyle. Stojanovska will also swim the 200m free on Aug. 16 at 3 a.m. ET and the 200m butterfly on Aug. 17 at 3:44 a.m.
Former men’s swimmer and current volunteer assistant coach Jorge Oliver (Puerto Rico) will swim the men’s 200m individual medley on Aug. 18. The preliminary heats will begin at 4:47 a.m. ET.
Incoming freshman Onur Uras (Turkey) will begin his Olympic experience on Aug. 19 at 4:10 a.m. ET in the men’s 100m fly.
Former Tech track standout Angelo Taylor (U.S.A) will try and capture his third Gold Medal and second in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles on Aug. 23. The prelims will run from 12:30-1 p.m. ET. Taylor won Gold in Sydney at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the men’s 400m hurdles.
Junior Chaunte Howard (U.S.A) finished second at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the women’s high jump and will compete in the qualifying rounds on Aug. 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. ET.
Former men’s basketball All-American Stephon Marbury will compete for Team USA at the Olympics. The U.S. will open up pool play against Puerto Rico on Aug. 15.
