Seven All-Americans Make ACC Academic Honor Roll

Aug. 28, 2008

ATLANTA – Seven All-Americans, including tennis players Amanda McDowell and Kristi Miller, volleyball player Ulrike Stegemann, track national champion Shantia Moss, divers Hannah Krimm and Stephanie England and golfer Cameron Tringale, highlight a list of 151 Georgia Tech student-athletes honored in the 2007-08 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The ACC’s 52nd Academic Honor Roll Wednesday recognizes academic excellence among its student-athletes. To be considered, an athlete must maintain a 3.0 GPA for the entire academic year.

Miller, a senior from Marysville, Mich., was the ACC Player of the year in women’s tennis this year, and graduated in May with a 4.0 GPA in History, Technology and Society. McDowell, a sophomore from Atlanta majoring in International Affairs, won the NCAA singles championship last spring.

Krimm, a sophomore from Upper Arlington, Ohio, majoring in Science, Technology and Culture, was a first-team All-American in three-meter diving and an honorable mention choice on the one-meter board. England, a senior from Titusville, Fla., majoring in Chemical Engineering, became one of the first two female All-America swimmers in Tech history for her top-16 finish on the platform and three-meter board.

Moss, a senior from Tamarac, Fla., majoring in International Affairs, earned her second All-America honor in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 NCAA Championship. Stegemann, a senior from Schwerin, Germany, who received her Management degree in May, was an honorable mention All-American last fall and was named all-ACC three times in her career. Tringale, a rising senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., is a Management major who has earned All-America and All-ACC honors three times each.

A total of 21 student-athletes on the list earned all-conference honors last year in their respective sports, including baseball players Charlie Blackmon, Derek Dietrich and Brad Feltes.

David Herren, Tech’s top cross country and distance runner from Rome, Ga., and Taylor Narewski, a senior sprinter from Birmingham, Ala., each made the list for the fifth time. Both athletes earned master’s degrees in May, Herren in health systems, Narewski in Public Policy.

Making the list for the fourth time in their careers are swimmer Jeff Burton, golfers Adam Cohan, David Dragoo and Taylor Hall, distance runner Elena Linn and tennis’ Miller.

Thirty-eight members of the Yellow Jackets’ track and field team, by far the most of any sport, earned their way into the list, followed by swimming and diving with 34, baseball with 21 and football with 20.
