May 1, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a 2-1 weekend that saw the Georgia Tech softball earn the head-to-head tiebreaker over Virginia Tech, Kelsi Weseman has been named the ACC Softball Player of the Week while Hope Rush earned the ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week nod alongside Cavalier Melanie Mitchell.

Weseman picks up her third Player of the Week honors this season, the fourth of her career while Rush picks up her third career Pitcher of the Week honor and first since 2010.

Weseman hit .571 on the week for the Jackets while tallying a 1.429 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .700. In a key three-game series against Virginia Tech, the Hutto, Tex., native had four hits, two of which went out of the park, and walked twice to help Tech into third place in the conference.

Weseman’s two homeruns, recorded in game one on Saturday, moved her put into a tie with Jen Yee for second place on the Tech all-time list with 54 career home runs. Weseman is also in sole control of second place on the career RBIs list thanks to her second homerun (195) passing Savannah Brown who played from 2005-08.

Rush was a perfect 2-0 on the week with two complete-game shutouts against Virginia Tech as the Jackets won both of her appearances by 5-0 scores. The Stockbridge, Ga., native allowed just eight hits on the weekend as she picked up her ninth and 10th shutouts of the season. She struck out nine between the two games in the 14.0 innings pitched. At the plate, Rush connected on two home runs, a three-run shot in game one and a grand slam, her second of the season and third of her career

The Yellow Jackets have the weekend off for finals and graduation and will return to action when they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the 2012 ACC Championship on Thursday, May 10.
