Ruiz Nearly Breaks School Record in Mile

Day 2 Results

BLACKSBURG, Va. — On day two of the ACC Indoor Championships, the Jackets saw impressive marks from multiple Georgia Tech student-athletes.

Standouts from the day include Jeanine Williams and Tyson Spears. Williams not only ran a career-best in the 60m dash (7.43), she also qualified for finals in the 60m hurdles, running an 8.20.

Tyson Spears also performed well, topping a new career mark in the men’s long jump, with a mark of 7.36m / 24’1.75″.

“I am very proud of this team and what they accomplished today. Tyson Spears was seventh in the Long Jump with a PR of 24’1.75″. Nahom Solomon fought the good fight in one of the most physical 5000m races I’ve ever watched finishing fifth,” said men’s track and field head coach Grover Hinsdale.  “I’m very happy and proud of the 400m group getting Ben Jean, Daniel Piestsch, and Ty Brooks through to finals. And last but not least, so proud of Avery Bartlett coming back today after anchoring the DMR last night to qualify for the finals in the 800m. At the ACC Championships, a big Friday makes for a big Saturday. Tomorrow is a big day.”

Amy Ruiz ran at an extremely high level, advancing to the finals in the mile with the second-best time in school history, where she narrowly missed the school record by 0.21 seconds. Ruiz would finish with a career-best time of 4:45.38.

“The women competed hard and we’re proud of their effort. Jeanine [Williams] did what she needed to do in advancing to tomorrow’s final, and Amy had a huge performance advancing as well.  They both have a great opportunity ahead of them, and we have some good chances to score tomorrow in the triple jump, the 3000m, and the 4x400m relay,” said women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky. “Overall, we didn’t quite have the day we were hoping for today with just too many near misses outside the top-eight scoring positions.  Going forward, we have to find a way to turn those performances into scoring efforts.”

Tomorrow’s action will begin with the women’s mile at 1:00 p.m.
