THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior center Freddie Burden (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro) remains on the official watch list for the 2016 Rimington Trophy, the Boomer Esiason Foundation announced on Wednesday.
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I FBS.
Burden has made 26-consecutive starts at center for the Yellow Jackets. With the 6-4, 299-pounder anchoring the offensive front, Georgia Tech has rushed for 7,863 yards (302.4 ypg) and surrendered just 26 sacks (1.0 pg) over the last two seasons. The Jackets have ranked first (2014) and eighth (2015) nationally in rushing yardage in Burden’s two campaigns as their starting center.
There are 62 centers on the Rimington Trophy’s fall watch list. Burden was also included on the spring watch list, which was released in May. The award’s committee will continue to monitor the list throughout the fall and announce finalists on Dec. 5. The 17th-annual Rimington Trophy will be presented on Jan. 14, 2017 at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Burden and the Yellow Jackets open the 2016 campaign on Sept. 3 when they face ACC foe Boston College in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Kickoff is set for 7:30 a.m. ET and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
