Rhett Leads Jackets on Day One of NCAA Track & Field Championships

June 11, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior sprinter Amandi Rhett finished 21st in the prelims of the 100 meters and anchored Georgia Tech’s women’s 4×100-meter relay to a 12th-place finish to lead the Jackets Wednesday at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.

Rhett, who will also compete in the 200 meters Thursday, led the Jackets’ 4×100 relay to a time of 44.37 and the 12th-place overall finish. The top eight qualifiers, paced by LSU’s 43.08 performance, qualified for Friday’s final. Tech’s team of Dana Rogers, Andriane Lapsley, Jessica DeFreitas and Rhett placed fourth in heat one and came within .02 seconds of its school record of 44.35.

Individually, Rhett ran 11.88 in the 100 meters, which was good for a fifth-place finish in heat one and the 21st spot overall. She placed 17th in the 100 a year ago. Led by South Carolina’s Aleen Bailey, the top 18 qualifiers advanced to Wednesday night’s semifinal round.

In other action, sophomore Zeb Sion finished 22nd in the qualifying round of the shot put with a toss of 56’10.75″. He was the first Yellow Jackets to qualify for NCAAs in the shot. The top 12 qualifiers moved on to Friday’s final.
